Burlington’s Mike Green leads Team Canada into the International Racquetball Federation (IRF) 16th World Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Aug. 4 – 11.
Green, the 2012 Canadian men’s champion and 2012 Pan American Champion, joins teammates Vincent Gagnon of Montreal and two Saskatoon players: Kris Odegard and Tim Landeryou.
Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg, the 2012 Canadian women’s champion, will lead the women’s team. She’ll play singles along with Brandi Jacobson Prentice of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que. The doubles team will be Frédérique Lambert of Montreal and Josée Grand’Maître of Longueuil, Que.
Team Canada’s head coach is Sue Swaine, CHPC, RN, CPMHN (Etobicoke, Ont.). Swaine’s serving in this role for the second time. Michel Gagnon (Longueuil, Que.) is the assistant coach. Swaine and Gagnon travelled and coached together at the 2012 Pan American Championships earlier this year in Temuco, Chile, where the team won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
The IRF World Championships has two parts. The competition will begin with individual competitions – singles and doubles – for the first four days. Then there will be a team competition in which countries will compete against each other in best of three matches; two singles matches as well as a doubles match.
