Corner drops to third in junior boys golf tourney


Orangeville resident Ryan Borg and Kody Fry of Grand Valley are tied atop of the leader board following second round action at the Investors Group Ontario Junior Boys’ Championship hosted by The Mandarin Golf and Country Club in Markham.

Borg, a member at Brampton Golf Club, delivered an even par 71 for a total tournament score of 141 (70-71), one-under par, while Fry delivered a one-under 70 on Wednesday to share the top spot with Borg after 36 holes.

First-round leader Charles Corner of Cayuga slipped into third place alongside Port Perry’s Jake McNulty. McNulty, a member at Granite Golf Club, moved from 11th place into a tie for third after firing a 69 on Wednesday (July 18). Both McNulty and Corner sit at even par with two rounds left to play.

Five golfers are tied for fifth place at one-over par; recent CN Future Links prairie champion Gajan Sivabalasigham, who is playing his home course this week, as well as Truman Tai of Markham, Zackery Second of Midland, Michael Nedoszytko of Toronto and Team Ontario member Carter Simon of Sutton West. Simon’s Team Ontario teammate Owen Bates of Mississauga rounds out the top 10 with a total score of 144 (74-70), two-over par.

Scores for area golfers included Blair Hamilton, Burlington, Hidden Lake GC, 72, 73 – 145, tied for 11th; Brendan Gibson, Flamborough, Heron Point Golf Links, 71, 75 – 146, tied for 15th; Hanish Nagrani, Welland, Lookout Point Country Club, 74, 73 – tied for 19th; Sean Bozuk, Burlington, Greystone Golf Club, 76, 73 – 149, tied for 29th; Robbie Johnson, Georgetown, The Club at North Halton, 72, 78 – 150, and Scott Banks, Oakville, Blue Springs Golf Club, 76, 74 – 150, tied for 33rd; three tied for 40th: Nicholas Ross, Dundas, Hamilton G & CC, 81, 70; Ryan Dyck, Welland, Lookout Point Country Club, 74, 77; and William Mahood, Oakville, public player, 76, 75 – 151; Brad Holmes, Burlington, Millcroft Golf Club, 77, 75; and Luke Atack, Hamilton, public player,) 75, 77 – 152, tied for 44th.

First played in 1923, the Ontario Junior Boys’ Championship is being contested for the 90th time this summer. Past winners include 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir (1988) and his longtime caddy, Brennan Little (1987), Ontario amateur golf legend Gary Cowan (1956), Nationwide and PGA Tour member Jon Mills (1996) 2009 NCAA Champion Matt Hill (2007), and 2010 Canadian Amateur and recent Ontario Amateur champion Albin Choi.
