Nationals’ Billings named offensive player of the week

Nationals’ attackman Garrett Billings was named as the Major League Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week after helping Hamilton earn a split of a weekend home-and-home series with the Ohio Machine.

Long Island Lizards’ defenseman CJ Costabile was the Defensive Player of the Week, while Denver Outlaws attackman Mark Matthews was selected as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week.

Billings, who was named as the Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his MLL career, registered six goals and three assists in the two games last week. After scoring three goals with an assist in the Nationals’ 13-12 loss against the Machine on Friday night, he led Hamilton to a 14-12 victory over the Machine by scoring three goals with two assists. He scored all three of his goals in the first half as Hamilton built a 6-5 halftime advantage en route to the victory.

After scoring just 12 goals in his first two MLL seasons, Billings has now tallied 13 goals in eight games this year while contributing 10 assists. With 23 points, he ranks third on the Nationals’ scoring list.

The Nationals are home to the Denver Outlaws on Saturday (July 28). Game time at the Ron Joyce Stadium at McMaster University is 7 p.m.
