The Brantford Red Sox took a 2-1 series lead by thumping the Burlington Twins 15-5 in one of two Intercounty Baseball League playoff games on Monday (July 30). Game four is Wednesday night in Brantford.
The Sox jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead on Terrell Alliman’s three-run home run and then broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh.
Josh McCurdy had the big hit in the sixth with a grand slam home run followed by a solo home run by Hyung Cho. McCurdy went 3-for-4 on the night with five RB while Cho and Alliman were each 3-for-6. Cho drive in four runs, including two home runs and Alliman had two doubles and three RBI. Stevie Lewis also added two hits and three RBI while Wayne Forman also had two hits for the Red Sox.
For the Twins, Connor Panas was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in including a two-run single in the seven and Branson Joseph had a run scoring double in the seventh.
Brantford starter Mike Meyers picked up the win, allowing only two runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in six innings. He was relieved by Robert Ramsdale and Brad Hogeterp.
Jordell Farquharson took the loss for Burlington, giving up seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out one. He was followed by Aaron Boag and Zack Fernandez.
In Guelph, the Royals scored nine runs in the opening inning behind Mark Allen’s three-run home run and Frankie Hare’s grand slam homer and added nine more over the next six innings en route to an 18-4 victory over the Ottawa Fat Cats.
The Royals win gives them a 2-0 series lead as the best-of-seven series shifts back to Ottawa for the weekend with Game 3 on Friday night.
