Hague tops area golfers in junior girls golf championship

Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont. leads the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship after the first round of competition at River Spirit Golf Club in Calgary, Alta.

Team Canada`s Henderson, 14, shot a 4-under par 68 on the day with five birdies and one bogey to lead by a single shot going into the second round, despite strong winds and rain on her final few holes.

Brogan McKinnon, 17, of Mississauga, Ont. sits a single shot behind Henderson in second place at 3-under par 69.
Henderson’s Team Canada teammate Taylor Kim, 17, of Surrey, B.C. scored a 1-under par 71 to finish in third place after the first round of competition, followed by a five-way tie for fourth place.

Sitting in 15th place is Jenna Hague of Burlington. She shot a 75 to go three-over par while Madison Easterbrook, also of Burlington, is in 26th place with a five-over 77. In 66th place is Annika Haynes of Oakville with an 83 (11 over par). In 77th is Samantha Spencer of Georgetown with an 85 while Alanna Haynes of Oakville is in 114th place with 94.
Due to her age, Henderson also leads the Juvenile Division (under 17 years old), while Tanguay and Keel sit in a tie for second place. Easterbrook is 10th, Annika Haynes is 26th, and Spencer is 32nd.

In the Inter-Provincial Team division, Team Ontario is tied for first place alongside defending champions Team British Columbia. Team Ontario is made up of Henderson, Jenna Hague, 18, of Burlington, and Stephanie Tucker, 18, of Orangeville, Ont.

This year’s Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Champion will receive an exemption to the 2013 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship, as well as each of the 2013 CN Canadian Women’s Tour events.
