The Hamilton Cardinals Minor Peewees came within a game of claiming the Dawg Dayz of Summer Mini Tournament in Oshawa over the Aug. 4-5 weekend, losing the championship game to the host Legionnaires.
Hamilton opened tournament play with a narrow 7-6 decision over the Legionnaires on Saturday. Michael Wheaton started the game with Jacob Gajic and Colton Roberts providing relief with Gajic getting the win.
The Cardinals won the game in their last at-bat with Andrew Johnson hitting a single to score Wheaton from third. Jacob Gajic got the win for the Redbirds in the opener.
The Scarborough Stingers scored all their runs in the bottom of the first inning but the Cards easily dispatched them 18-3 in their second game. Hamilton had opened the scoring a single run in the top of the first. After the Stingers had taken the lead, Hamilton added four runs in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and 10 in the fifth.
Starter Mitchell Snow got the win with Gajic finishing up.
At the Plate, the Cards were led by Jack Morin’s 4-for-4 day (all singles) and two runs scored. Laurence Bistoyong went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored twice.
On Sunday, the Cards were 6-2 victors over the Richmond Hill Phoenix to make the final game.
In a game that had two rain delays lasting almost three hours in total, Roberts went the distance for the complete game win. He had four strikeouts, walked two and gave up six hits.
The championship game started with Oshawa scoring five runs in the top of the first inning and going on to win 11-5.
The Redbirds were able to score three runs in their first at-bat but could not overcome the lead.
Gajic started with Wheaton coming on in relief. Kyle Samson and Wheaton both went 2-for-3 and scored a run each.
