Canada has named a star-studded Men’s 7s squad packed with international experience for the 2012 North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Rugby 7s Championship, the 2013 Rugby 7s World Cup regional qualifier, in Ottawa.
Included in the lineup is backrower and current McMaster Marauder Tyler Ardron of Peterborough.
All 12 members of the squad have played on the IRB world 7s circuit in the last year, including new captain Nanyak Dala who has also been a regular feature in the National Senior Men’s 15s side.
John Moonlight and Phil Mack return to international rugby after long rehabilitations from serious injuries. Mack worked hard over the summer to return from an ACL reconstruction and recorded a personal best speed time at a recent fitness session.
The top two Men’s sides from the NACRA tournament will qualify for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Seven in Moscow, Russia next June.
Canada and the United States will be the favourites at the regional tournament which features a number of emerging rugby nations, including Mexico, Jamaica and Barbados.
The tournament comes hot on the heels of the 2012 Olympic Games in London which gave the Canadian rugby community a taste of what to expect when rugby 7s debuts at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
The men’s and women’s squads are excited to play a tournament on home soil and are looking forward to receiving vocal support from Ottawa and the surrounding areas.
