Canadian rowers fare well at World’s


Canada’s lightweight men’s pair of Eric Woelfl of St. Catharines, and John Sasi of North Delta, B.C., finished first in their rep at the 2012 World Rowing Senior & Junior Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on Thursday (Aug 16).

A time of 7:00.48 advanced them to the semifinal along with second-place Italy (7:01.81) who was overtaken by Canada in the final metres of the race.

The Canadian lightweight women’s quad (Elizabeth Fenje, Laura Sanhueza-Miller, St. Catharines’ Erin Snelgrove, and Lindsay Sferrazza) was fourth in its rep in 6:59.80, and are relegated to the B final.

The other senior crew at this regatta, the men’s coxed pair, already advanced based on winning Wednesday’s heat.

In the junior (18 and younger) races, the men’s double was in tough in today’s heat – finishing fifth and missing out on a quarter-final berth. Canada’s time was 6:44.22. The young German double dominated this race, finishing in 6:31.73.

The junior women’s four also advanced to a semifinal race.
