Smiley steals defensive football honour


Burlington Braves defensive back Shane Smiley is this week’s defensive player of the week in the Ontario Football Conference’s junior division.

The second-year DB from Brantford had a career day in the Braves’ 35-12 victory over the Twin Cities Predators. A week after Burlington defeated the Hamilton Hurricanes in the season openers, Smiley came up big in Week Two with a pair of key interceptions for the Braves and completed his career day with a half-time marriage proposal to his girlfriend.

The Braves will look to knock off the London Beefeaters this Saturday (Aug. 25) at 7p.mm at Nelson Stadium in a matchup of two undefeated teams.

The offensive player weekly honour went to the Beefeaters’ running back Kyle Woldenburg-Puyda, who had 27 carries for 193 yards and one touchdown in a 27-7 victory over the St. Leonard Cougars

The third-year player had three TDs in the first game of the season.

The special teams player of the week is kicker Dan Colella of the Windsor AKO Fratmen. He was two-for-two on field goals and had four point-after kicks to produce 10 points in the Fratmen’s 38-7 victory over the Brampton Bears. He also had five kickoffs for 235 yards and nine punts for 320 yards.

Colella is in his second year in the OFC. Windsor will meet will look to remain undefeated when they host the Ottawa Sooners on Sunday at Windsor Stadium.
