The McMaster men’s lacrosse team opened its 2012 Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association season with a 8-6 road loss to the Sudbury Laurentian Voyageurs.
The Voyageurs would get the scoring started in the first with a goal from Matthew Volpe assisted by Bob Pollock. The Marauders would even it up at 12:50. The goal would come from Jamie Batten on the power play, assisted by Mitchell Iszkula. Once again, Laurentian would take the lead on the power play from Clint Lamarsh, but before the quarter was over Batten would get this second of the game for a 2-2 stalemate.
In the second quarter, McMaster’s Mark Phillips, assisted by veteran Carter Williams, gave the Marauders the lead but Laurentian’s Lamarsh evened the score.
The third period would prove to be the Marauders downfall with the Voyageurs getting five goals from Neil McInroy, Paul Jelley, Lamarsh’s third, Pollock, and Volpe’s second of the night.
McMaster’s push in the fourth quarter resulted in three goals. Williams, who also drew an assist on Taylor Dredge’s goal, and Iszkula completed the Marauders scoring. Batten assisted on Iszkula’s counter.
The Marauders will welcome the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday (Sept. 12) to Alumni Field at 8:30 p.m.
