The reigning Ontario Colleges Athletic Association soccer champions scored a pair of victories over Mohawk on Saturday (Sept. 15) at Redeemer University College in Ancaster.
The Humber women got two goals from Angela Solarz in a 3-1 decision over the Mountaineers. The Hawks grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals in the 11th and 31st minutes. That score stood until the 73rd minute when the Humber goalkeeper handled the ball outside her 18-yard box and gave Mohawk a free kick.
Kaitlynn Staniuk stepped up for the kick and notched her second goal in as many games to give the Mountaineers hope. That was dashed in the 86th minute when the Hawks added the insurance marker.
Jody Hagen played an outstanding defensive game for the Mountaineers.
The Humber men blanked Mohawk, 2-0. Shezan Singh and Nick Cisternino got the Hawks goals.
Both Mohawk teams are 1-1 and resume league play on Wednesday (Sept. 19) when the Sheridan Bruins visit. The women play at 4.30 p.m. followed by the men’s game. The Sheridan women are 1-1 while the men’s team is 1-0.
