Rugby Marauders break into win column

Kingston – The McMaster men’s rugby team captured its first win of the season, beating RMC Paladins, 39-19, on Saturday (Sept. 15). On the road, the Marauders earned the win by a score of 39-19.

After two home losses to start the Ontario University Athletics new season, the Marauders appeared headed for a third setback after the Paladins scored the game’s first try. RMC’s Aaron Barry (Uxbridge, Ont.) had the try and Jaemok Lee (Qualicum Beach, B.C.), added a convert.

But the visiting Marauders responded with 20 points of their own with tries from Ryan Fried (New Hamburg, Ont.) and Davor Stojanov (Stoney Creek). Andrew Ferguson (Mississauga) would make the convert on both, as well as score two penalty goals.

In the second half, the Marauders outscored their hosts 19-12 to secure the win. Ferguson would score two tries and two converts and Fried would tally his second try of the game. Ferguson ended the contest with a game-high 25 points.

Scoring for RMC in the second half was Riley Saliken (Abbotsford, BC) with a pair of tries and a convert from Lee.

The Marauders head to St. Catharines on Saturday, Sept. 22 to take on the undefeated 3-0 Brock Badgers at 1 p.m.
