Love was in the air on the Sept. 15-16 weekend for the McMaster men’s tennis team which started its Ontario University Athletics season with matches against the Western Mustangs and the Montreal Carabins.
On Saturday, the Marauders fell to the Mustangs 5-2. The two wins came from captain Abbas Punju and David Pinto.
The following day, McMaster had better success against the Carabins and won 4-3. Doubles victories included wins from the team of Josh Cadesky and Panju over Carabins Augustin Lazarus and Columban Bouvine and Marauders Matt Holland and Pinto took down the Montreal team of David Sarrasin and Antoine Bourdon.
Singles victories against Montreal came from Panju with scores of 6-4, 6-3 over Sarrasin. Cadesky beat Bourdon 6-3, 6-4 and Marauder Michael Salib defeated Carabin Kevin Beljaers 6-3, 7-5.
Panju finished off the weekend with two singles victories and a doubles win. He also played a tightly contested match with Western’s Tomo Ono that went to two tie breaks 7-6, 7-6. Cadesky’s return to the line-up helped boost McMaster’s victory over Montreal and Pinto also had a solid weekend of a three-set win on Saturday versus Western, and a doubles win the following day with teammate Holland.
Rookies Salib and Jake Morris looked promising for the Marauders in their debut weekend.
