St. Catharines – The McMaster men’s rugby team left Brock University with a narrow 26-25 over the second place Badgers on Saturday (Sept. 22) in Ontario University Athletics play.
In handing the Badgers their first lost after three straight wins, McMaster evened its record at 2-2 and is tied for fourth in the standings.
Cam Stones started the scoring in just the second minute of the game and Andrew Ferguson would make the convert for the 7-0 Marauders’ lead.
The five-minute mark would start a scoring torrent for the Badgers as Zack Lamacraft would connect for a penalty goal for three points. From there, Ben Harmer and Reece Hummel scored tries for Brock, and Lamacraft would make one of two converts and another penalty goal for a 17-7 lead.
Before the half was over, in the 40th minute, Evan Smith added more points on the board for McMaster and Ferguson would make the convert to trail the Badgers by just three going into the second.
Three minutes into the second half, Davor Stojanov scored his first try of the game and Ferguson would make the convert despite the windy conditions to go ahead 21-17. Ferguson would score a try of his own in the 68th minute.
Despite a try and convert in the 72nd minute from Brock, the home team would fall shy by one point and the Marauders would go on to win it.
McMaster takes on the 0-3 Golden Hawks on Saturday (Sept. 29) at Laurier.
