Ryan Kotar can’t stop running. If the running back for the Hamilton Hurricanes isn’t piling up the yardage for the Ontario Football Conference leaders, he’s running away with weekly honours.
For the second straight period, Kotar was named the OFC’s offensive player of the week. On Saturday, he converted 19 rushes into 159 yards and two touchdowns in the 6-1 Hurricanes 33-7 revenge win over the Burlington Braves. Burlington is responsible for Hamilton’s lone loss this season, a 45-38 season opening outcome.
Kotar, a third-year back and Mohawk College student, leads the OFC in rushing with 963 yards and nine TDs. He’s had seven straight games going over the century mark in rushing.
Kotar’s skills will be put to the test on Friday (Sept. 28) when the ’Canes goes after their seventh consecutive victory, and the regular season title in the schedule finale when they travel to London to play the Beefeaters, who also boast a 6-1 record. The Ottawa Sooners handed London its only setback.
The Beefeaters will be looking to repeat Special Teams Player of the Week, kicker Zach Medeiros to help them get past Hamilton.
The third-year punter/kicker out of St. Joseph’s Secondary School in St. Thomas had another great all-around kicking performance in the Beefs 20-17 victory over the Windsor AKO Fratmen last weekend.
Medeiros booted two field goals, but the killer was a game-winning 49-yarder with two seconds left on the clock. He also put the laces to 11 punts for 430 yards, two kick-offs for 135 yards and was 2-for-2 on converts.
The Hurricanes-Beefeaters showdown is set for 8 p.m. at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
The OFC’s Defensive Player of the Week is linebacker Devin Mcmullin of the Twin Cities Predators. He had seven solo tackles, three assisted takedowns, and one QB sack. Despite his best efforts the Predators fell 47-6 to the Sooners.
