Hamilton’s Wu top youth athlete in Ontario

Ontario Athletics has crowned Hamilton’s Marcus Wu its youth division athlete of the year in multi-sports competitions. The youth division includes athletes in the 17 and under age bracket. To compete in the multi-sports events, Wu, who attends Westmount high school, added shot putting, the high jump, javelin, and distance races. Prior to the 2012 season, Wu focused on sprints and hurdles.

Wu excelled in pentathlon and octathlon competitions in Ontario meets, finishing on top. He enhanced his No. 1 position with a fourth place showing at the national’s octathlon.

Events making up the octathlon are the shot, javelin, long jump, high jump. 110 hurdles, and the 100-400-1,000 metre races. The pentathlon is a little less taxing and involves the high jump, shot, long jump, hurdles and 1,000m run.

Wu was recognized on Saturday (Sept. 22) at the Ontario Athletics banquet. He will moved into the junior division next season.
