Master Marauders remain winless in five starts in the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association after dropping a 10-9 decision to the Brock Badgers on Alumni Field on Wednesday (Sept. 26).
While the Badgers struck first – Dustin Dunn (Peterborough), assisted by Brandon Staal (Curtis, Ont.) – in the third minute of the game to send a message to the Marauders they were not about to lose their first game of the season, McMaster stormed back with three unanswered goals.
Jamie Batten (Caledon, Ont.) netted two power plays with assists from Mitchell Iszkula (Hamilton) and Carter Williams (Scottsdale, AZ). Williams added the third goal with an assist from Rob Murray (Toronto).
Steve Priolo (St. Catharines) gave the Badgers their second goal.
Up 3-2, the Marauders were unable to hold onto the lead. Brock counted three to go ahead 5-3. Greg Davidson (Toronto), Jordan Weedmark (Carleton Place, Ont.), (both unassisted) and Travis Gibbons (Owen Sound, Ont.) gave the visitors the lead. Justin Pychel (Welland), assisted on Gibbons goal. The three scores came within the first 10 minutes of the second quarter.
McMaster got within one from Ryan Adams (Burlington), assisted by Batten only to see Brock score two more before the first half was over. Gibbons and Davidson had the markers.
Refusing to quit and trailing 7-4, the Marauders shut down the Badgers offence in the third quarter and scored four goals to lead 8-7. Taylor Dredge (Milton) got the scoring started with an assist from Murray. Adams picked up his second of the game from Iszkula. Williams got his second of the game from Murray’s third assist and Iszkula got one of his own from Batten.
But again Brock badgered and in the final quarter put together three goals. Weedmark scored two more and Davidson tallied his third of the night. All goals were assisted by Staal.
Down by two, the Marauders scored with four minutes to go. Mark Phillips (Kitchener, Ont.) would get the goal with an assist from Brent Murphy (Fergus, Ont.).
On Sept. 20, the Marauders visited the Guelph Gryphons and lost 23-5. Goal scorers for McMaster were Brandon Burr (Sarnia, Ont.), Quinn Welychka (London, Ont.), Batten, with two, and Iszkula.
The Marauders are in action on Sunday (Sept. 30). They will be hosts to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Alumni Field at 1 p.m.
