Mohawk Mountaineers and Redeemer University College Royal already have a good rivalry going in numerous Ontario Colleges Athletic Association varsity sports and perhaps they’ll soon add a new one.
Mohawk and Redeemer women met on the rugby field at Mohawk Sports Park on Thursday (Sep. 27) in an exhibition encounter. The Mountaineers are in just their second varsity season and know all about growing pains. The Royals are just a club team with hopes of gaining official status in the future.
Mohawk won the exhibition, 63-0. They led 34-0 at the half.
Danika Faucon led the Mountaineers with two tries and four converts for 18 points. Gloria Hernandez and Stephanie Draper each had three tries for 15 points apiece. Jahnelle Morgan Geddes had 10 points from two tries and Nicole Craig got a try for five points.
Redeemer had about 20 players for the contest and much like their Mountaineer counterparts of a couple of years ago, have taken to the rugged sport immediately.
Both teams found the experience valuable and they hope to play again.
In OCAA play, Mohawk is winless after two games and has yet to score a point.
