The McMaster women’s soccer team stormed past the Brock Badgers, 4-0, on Saturday (Sept. 29) at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The game’s first goal didn’t come until the 29th minute when a cross from Emma Mangialardi (Oakville) allowed Alicjia Giftopolous (Ancaster) to get a shot off. Her first attempt was stopped by the goalkeeper, but the rebound came back to the fourth-year veteran who would not be denied.
Seven minutes later, Mac goalkeeper Jocelyn Wilkins (London) was decidedly beaten by a Badger. The Brock player had an inviting wide open net to tie up the game only to have defender Cristina Leonardelli (Woodbridge, Ont.) come out of nowhere for a diving save.
In the second half, defender Sophia Ykema (Surrey, B.C.) scored in the 57th minute to make it 2-0.McMaster’s third goal came from substitute Alyssa Fenuta (Woodbridge, Ont.). The fourth-year midfielder shot a looping ball over the goalkeepers head for her first of the season in the 63rd minute. The Marauders added additional insurance in extra time from forward Stephanie Davis (Mississauga).
Wilkins and Brittany Duffey (Markham) shared goalkeeper duty for the Marauders.
McMaster hosts the No. 5 Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday and the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday at Ron Joyce Stadium. Both games start at 1 p.m.
