The McMaster men solidified their hold on second place in Ontario University Athletics soccer with their eighth win this season, a 4-0 blanking of the Brock Badgers on Saturday (Sept. 29) at Ron Joyce Stadium.
It took the Marauders 25 minutes to get on the board. Mark Reilly (Hamilton) used his head to re-direct a cross only to have the Brock goalkeeper thwart the scoring attempt. But midfielder Paterson Farrell (Oakville) was waiting for a rebound and he quickly deposited the ball into the net.
Four minutes later, second-year Elliot Pecora (Sarnia, Ont.) scored his first goal of the season with a ball fed from Ryan Garnett (Kitchener) that would beat the goalie on a wide angle shot. The half would end with McMaster up, 2-0.
The Marauders dominated the second half. Goalkeeper Angelo Cavalluzzo (Hamilton) was barely tested as Brock was penned up in their end for the majority of the half.
Garnett facilitated another goal. A shot from the top of the box rebounded from the Brock goalkeeper and forward Reilly buried it for his seventh of the season in the 62nd minute.
The final goal was scored just five minutes later. On a through ball, Farrell was wide open and one-on-one with just Brock’s goalkeeper. The third-year business student deftly placed a low shot to the corner for McMaster’s fourth goal of the game.
With 15 minutes left, goalkeeper Cavalluzzo gave way to Mo Mohamed (Hamilton) to finish the match.
McMaster is host to the Laurier Golden Hawks and the Waterloo Warriors next weekend on Friday and Saturday at Ron Joyce Stadium.
