Marauders hold onto second in rugby

Waterloo – After losing the first two games to start Ontario University Athletics men’s rugby play, the McMaster Marauders won their third straight game, dropping the Golden Hawks, 35-12, in Laurier’s nest.

Friday’s (Sept. 28) victory left McMaster tied with the Brock Badgers for second place with 15 points each. The Guelph Gryphons top the standings with 24 points from a 5-0 record.

Just seven minutes into the game, McMaster scored the games first try from third-year Davor Stojanov (Stoney Creek). Jame Leveridge (Oakville) made the convert for the seven points. Craig Leveridge (Oakville) and Cameron Stones (Whitby) added two more trys and James Leveridge would make both converts before the half ended with McMaster on top, 21-0.

In the second half, Laurier got on the board with a try from Andrew Thomson (Pickering, Ont.) and the convert from Scott Brown (Truro, NS). Jeff Dinsmore (Waterloo, Ont.) had the Golden Hawks final try.

The Marauders added two more trys and two more converts to cap off the win. Exchange student Joseph Ross (Sydney, Australia) and rookie Richard Ormrod (Gormley, Ont.) scored for McMaster and Craig Leveridge added both converts.

After three road games, Marauders return to the Back Ten Field with the Toronto Varsity Blues visiting on Oct. 5 at 3 p.m.
