Despair and delight were the key words for the Mohawk Mountaineers women’s basketball team on day one of an invitational tournament at Fleming College Peterborough on Saturday (Sep. 29).
The Mountaineers dropped a nail-biter 68-64 decision to the host Fleming Knights in their opener. Rachelle Abella and Daniella Randazzo each scored 11 points for Mohawk. Careena Browne scored eight and Porscha Hewitt added eight.
Hewitt then caught fire in the second game with a 20-point performance that included seven rebounds as the Mountaineers topped the Durham Lords, 71-52. Cassie Brown scored 12 points and Lacey Walters had nine points and eight rebounds.
The Mountaineers, who compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, were scheduled to play the University of Waterloo Warriors, members of Ontario University Athletics, on Sunday morning.
