Swierzewski tops busy Mac golfers

The McMaster men’s and women’s golf teams had a busy weekend, attending both the Waterloo/Laurier 36-hole Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, and the Guelph Invitational on Monday.

At Whistle Bear Golf Club on Saturday, the Marauders men’s team took to the course with David Bigelow (Waterloo) shooting the best of the day for the Marauders at 74. Greg Gabel (Ancaster) shot five over for a 77 and Patrick Thornley (London) shot a 79. Mark Young (Scarborough) and Darryl McClure (Orangeville) capped off the Marauders scores that day with an 81 and 85, respectively.

On day two of the Invitational, the Marauders played at Grey Silo Golf Course in Waterloo. Bigelow shot a 73 for a total of 147 over the weekend and Gabel shot a 76 for a total of 153 to become McMaster’s top two finishers. Thornley also improved from Saturday shooting a 78 for 157, Young finished on Sunday with a 77 and a total of 158 and lastly McClure shot a much improved 76 for a total of 161.

The team total for the two days was 613 for the Marauders, placing them ninth. The Waterloo Warriors won the event with a score of 569.

On Sunday at Cutten Fields Golf Course, both the men’s and women’s teams competed at the Guelph Invitational.

The best finisher for the day came from the women’s side. Rookie Katie Swierzewski (Burlington) placed third, shooting a 78, just two shots behind the winner, Devon Rizzo (Brantford) from Waterloo. Michaela DiMarcantonio (Burlington) tied for ninth and shot an 85. Other Marauders competing on Monday included Sasha Wright (Ancaster) who scored a 96 and Laura Semotiuk (Pickering) who shot a 98. The team totalled 259 points. The Waterloo Warriors won the team event.

On the men’s side, the Marauders finished with a score of 316. Young was the best finisher on the day with a 77 and just one point behind him was teammate Jonathan Lam (Unionville). A score of 80 came from rookie Colin McCoy (Tillsonburg), rookie Wes Kwok (Markham) shot an 81 and Bigelow finished off the team score with an 83. Queen’s University won the team event with a total of 299 points.

McMaster’s next Invitational will be hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday October 5.
