A win and a loss for Mohawk in pre-season basketball at George Brown on Wednesday (Oct. 3).
The Mountaineer women downed the Huskies, 66-62, while their male counterparts were on the short end of an 80-63 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association tune-up.
In the women’s encounter, Rachelle Abella had 12 points and Daniella Randazzo added nine points in a very hard fought and intense game for the Mountaineers.
“I was really proud of some our rookies – Careena and Carissa Brown and Katelyn Arbour – who stepped up their compete level and played great full court defense,” said head coach Kevin Duffy.
“We lost Rachelle to a knee injury and at this time it looks like she will be out for two to three weeks, but I was really proud of the rest of the team who rallied together. They picked up the slack and led us to a really tough victory, over a team who took the provincial bronze medal last year.”
In men’s play, Andrew Cicuttini had 21 points for the Mountaineers. Pat Ivarone scored nine and Shakele Henry Osborne picked up seven.
Mountaineers’ head coach Brian Jonker said the Huskies were full marks for the win.
“They played extremely hard and we weren’t up for the challenge,” said Jonker. “It was a good learning experience for us and we have lots of things we can learn from the loss.”
