Sheridan Bruins hung a couple of defeats on the visiting Mohawk Mountaineers in pre-season volleyball play at the Trafalgar campus in Oakville on Thursday (Oct. 4).
The Sheridan men downed Mohawk 25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 15-25, 8-15.
Marcin Jedrzejewski led the Mountaineer offense with 11 kills and four service aces. Trevor McLaughlin had 10 kills, one ace and nine digs.
Mohawk head coach Matt Schnarr said his team attained both of its goals in serves and ‘serve and pass.’ Schnarr said his young players handled the situation very well. “If we can stay consistent controlling the ball on the court we will be fine in the long run.”
Meanwhile, the Sheridan women downed Mohawk in a four-set exhibition, 17-25, 12-25, 17-25, 24-26.
Veterans Julie Gagnon and Kristin VanHartingsveldt led the Mountaineer offence with seven kills each. Rookie Terri Faloney saw her fist action of the season and scored three aces and added three defensive digs.
Mohawk head coach Andrew Nicholson said it was another learning experience for his young squad. “We tried a few of the rookies in different positions for this exhibition match and it seemed to disrupt our defensive flow,” said Nicholson.
“We’ll be much better against them when the season starts”.
