They entered their playoff qualifying match at Fanshawe as underdogs, but the Mohawk men’s soccer team’s performance earned them the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Team of the Week Award for the period ending Oct. 14.
Less than two weeks after Fanshawe scored an 8-1 road win over Mohawk, the Mountaineers had the daunting task of returning to London to meet the Falcons. But after 120 minutes of goalless soccer, the teams went to penalty kicks.
It took seven rounds before Mohawk finally won, on Zachary Waldick’s spot kick. Even with that, Mohawk goalkeeper Alex Mickeloff had to make one last save to secure the triumph, which advanced the Mountaineers to a crossover playoff game at Seneca on Sunday (Oct. 21). At stake will be a berth in the OCAA championship at Redeemer the following weekend.
