Smith adds scoring punch to McCoys’ lineup

For the past two seasons, work commitments have kept Nick Smith out of a Dundas Real McCoys’ uniform. But this season, Smith is back to resume his quest for the Allan Cup Trophy.

The 33-year-old Hamilton native is a former Most Valuable Player, and first team all-star centre in the league, and led Major League Hockey (now Allan Cup Hockey) in scoring in 2009-10. He is another of the many players who bring National Hockey League experience to the McCoys’ lineup. Smith played 15 games with the Florida Panthers in 2001-02.

The six-foot, two-inch, 195-pound centreman collected 144 points in 58 regular season games in three seasons with Dundas. He scored 52 goals and had 92 assists including 10 powerplay goals and five game winning goals. In the playoffs, he added seven goals and 27 assists in 21 games.

“Nick wants to win the Allan Cup, and to be in top shape as we prepare to host the tournament next season. His all-round skill level, and attitude will be great assets,” said McCoys’ general manager Don Robertson. “He and (Ryan) Christie will make a powerful combination for the McCoys,” said Dundas General Manager Don Robertson.

“I’m sure the fans around the league will be happy to see him back in their rinks on game nights.”

Robertson also announced that the McCoys have added former Dundas Blues defenceman and National Collegiate Athletic Association graduate Dave Cianfrini to the lineup.

The 27-year-old Dundas native played four seasons with the Canisius College Golden Griffins beginning in 2006-07, and followed that with stints in the East Coast, Southern Professional, and Central hockey leagues in Victoria, Columbus, and Fort Wayne.

“Dave is a Dundas kid who had great success in the NCAA, and minor pro ranks. We are excited to have him join the McCoys, and the fact he is a local player is real a bonus to us. He skates well, and will adapt to this league quickly, I’m sure,” said Robertson.

Cianfrini at six-feet and 205 pounds brings size and a solid left-handed shot to the Dundas rearguard position.

The McCoys open the 2012-13 season with a pair of road games in Orillia on Friday, Oct. 19 and on Saturday, Oct. 20 in Whitby. The McCoys first home game is Friday, Oct. 26 when Orillia visits Dundas.
