Golf glory eludes Mountaineers

A course record performance highlighted women’s play, while Humber won another title, in the 2012 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Golf National Championship in Oshawa on Friday (Oct. 19).

Valerie Tanguay of Champlain-St. Lawrence blazed to a course record five under par 67 to win the women’s title at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club. She ended up at plus-4 for the championship, five shots ahead of Katherine Gravel-Coursol of CEGEP Lionel-Groulx. OCAA Champion Tiffany Albath of host Durham was well back in sixth place.

Mohawk’s Ashley Cochrane shot a final round 99 and finished in 21st place, while Jessica Fell carded 107 and was 25th.

Mohawk was seventh out of eight teams. UBC Okanagan won its first national women’s team championship.

In men’s play, Ontario Colleges Athletic Association champion Colton Kalkanis of Georgian fired a final round one under par 71 to win the title at plus-1. He finished one shot ahead of Robert Ellis of Niagara.

Humber won its fourth straight men’s team title and 10th overall.
