Mustangs stampede over Marauders

After reeling off five straight victories, the Marauders men’s rugby team went down in defeat, 33-25, at the hands of the Western Mustangs on Saturday on Back 10 Field at McMaster.

The setback left McMaster with a 5-3 record as the Marauders concluded regular season play in Ontario University Athletics. Mac sits in fourth place. The full OUA schedule wraps up next Saturday (Oct. 26).

The Marauders were the first to get on the board with a penalty goal from third-year Andrew Ferguson (Mississauga). But the Mustangs quickly responded, scoring a try by Courtney Mendez. Mike Turnbull (Oakville) missed the convert for a 5-3 edge in favour of the visitors.

Just two minutes later, McMaster regained the lead. Fourth-year Trevor Anderson (Toronto) scored his third try of the season to finish off a series of passes. Ferguson added the convert to put Mac up, 10-5.

But before the half was over, Western was back twice. The Mustangs got tries from Rory Tomlinson (Allison) and Mike Penczak (Brantford) with Turnbull converting.

Ferguson gave the Marauders another penalty goal the send McMaster into halftime trailing, 19-13.

In the second half, a nice passing play from Western allowed Turnbull to score the try and the convert.

McMaster went work to get back on board and Ferguson earned a try to get within eight points.

But there was no stopping the Mustangs and Tomlinson added his second try of the game with Turnbull connecting for his fourth convert.

Ferguson gave the Marauders seven more points to finish the scoring.
