Hopes for a spot in next week’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s soccer championship came to an end for the Mohawk Mountaineers on Sunday (Oct. 21).
A 4-3 loss at Seneca in a quarter final match decided by penalty kicks ousted the Mountaineers, who led three times in the game.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring as Nenad Njegovan connected 22 minutes into the contest. Seneca equalized at 46 minutes when Malven Francis scored for the home side.
Patryk Korbut put Mohawk ahead 2-1 in the 56th minute, but Mario Lugo-Uribe tied the game again three minutes later. The game remained 2-2 through 90 minutes.
In extra time, Abdullah Abdullah gave the Mountaineers their third lead in the 94th minute, but Mauricio Chamale squared things again for Seneca at 115 minutes.
Tied at the end of extra time, the teams went to spot kicks. Njegovan scored on Mohawks first shot, but the Mountaineers missed the next three. The Sting were good on three of four shots. Victor Gallo, Chamale and Xavier Wright gave the home team victory.
Seneca will join Humber, St. Clair and Sheridan in the OCAA final four at Redeemer on Oct. 26-27.
