Mountaineers ruffle Hawks feathers in men’s basketball

The reigning national champion Mohawk men’s basketball team upped its record to 2-0 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Region play at Humber on Saturday (Nov. 3).

The Mountaineers scored a 57-53 victory over the Hawks, who dropped to 0-2. Andrew Cicuttini paced Mohawk with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jeff Hunt had 11 points and seven boards and Xzennis Brereton scored nine points.

Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker said it was a hard fought win. “We were up 24-20 at the half and I thought we really competed on the defensive end,” said Jonker. “The key for us to win was keeping them off the boards and we really did that out-rebounding them by eight. Anytime you can come in to Humber and win you have to feel good about the result.”

However, in women’s play, Humber beat Mohawk 52-37 leaving both teams with 1-1 marks.

Lacey Wolters led the Mountaineers with a 12 point, 11 rebound, double-double. Careena Browne added seven points.

“We were our own worst enemy with too many unforced turnovers,” said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. “We did a great job of pressuring in the second half, but just couldn’t finish plays off by converting at the other end. We also had too many mental breakdowns at both ends of the court. You won’t get away with that against good teams like Humber. They made us pay, time and time again.”
