Heading into Thursday’s (Nov. 8) Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s national men’s soccer championship, the McMaster Marauders have been named the Ontario University Athletics Pizza Pizza Team of the Month for October.
The Marauders went undefeated in the month with five wins and three ties. One of their wins included a quarter-final defeat over the Guelph Gryphons.
They consistently moved up in the CIS Top Ten rankings, finishing at No. 3 last week, and repeated as OUA champions over the weekend, defeating two Top Ten teams, scoring five goals each game, in the process. Mac boasts five OUA all-stars; Andrew Pastoric, Ryan Garnet, Mark Reilly, Angelo Calluzzo and Garret McConville.
The women’s team of the month was the Toronto Varsity Blues Field hockey squad.
The Blues capped off a perfect OUA season with a dominant 5-2 win over the Guelph Gryphons to claim their 29th provincial title in team history. The Blues went 7-0 in October, outscoring their opponents 41-5. The Gryphons were the only team to score against the Blues, as U of T edged Guelph 4-3 in their final regular season meeting.
Fifth-year veteran Kaelan Watson, as well as sophomore and third-year standouts Amanda Woodcroft and Tegan Stairs, earned OUA all-star and CIS all-Canadian status.
Burlington’s Alexandra Evanyshyn and Kathryn Williams are members of the Blues.
