Montreal – Playing in front of 18,582 hockey-hungry fans, the Hamilton Bulldogs dropped a 4-1 decision to the Syracuse Crunch on Friday (Nov. 9) at the Bell Centre.
As they have in past seasons the Bulldogs, the American Hockey League affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Canadiens, played the “home” game on Montreal’s ice.
With the NHL in work stoppage, Friday’s game was the big ticket.
And while they may have had a large crowd to see what the farm team had to offer, the loss was Hamilton’s sixth in 10 games this season. Friday they managed a meagre 14 shots over three periods: Three in the first, five in the second and six in the third.
Tyler Johnson scored two goals while Radko Gudas and Richard Panik both added two assists for the Crunch who lead the Eastern Conference’s East division with a record of 7-1-1-1. Hamilton is last in the Western Conference’s North Division with a record of 4-4-1-1.
Syracuse opened the scoring at 16:01 of the first frame on a goal by Philip-Michael Devos. Dmitry Korobov’s shot from the left point was tipped by Devos and eluded goaltender Robert Mayer.
The Bulldogs knotted the count at 2:07 of the second stanza on a goal by Steve Quailer, his first in professional hockey. Quailer snapped a shot over the shoulder of goaltender Dustin Tokarski.
The Crunch took the lead at 19:08 of the second period on a goal by Mike Angelidis. J.T. Wyman put a shot on Mayer from the right circle and the rebound came out to Angelidis who slid the puck into the net.
Syracuse made it 3-1 at 7:58 of the third frame on a goal by Johnson. Johnson scored his second goal three minutes later.
Syracuse outshot Hamilton 31-14.
The Bulldogs’ next game is a morning affair on Wednesday (Nov.14) at 10:00 a.m. against the Rochester Americans.
