TORONTO – The No. 3 McMaster Marauders continued their winning ways in the 2012-13 Ontario University Athletics men’s volleyball season with a three-set sweep of the Ryerson Rams on Saturday (Nov. 10), 25-15, 28-26, 22-22. The Marauders are 4-0 in league play.
The Marauders asserted themselves quickly in the first set, jumping out to an 11-2 lead. In what seemed like a McMaster-dominated set, the Rams actually came out with more kills, but could not keep the ball in play to take a lead. The Marauders needed just 16 minutes to take the first set.
Ryerson didn’t seem fazed by the quick loss and built a four point lead at 11-7 after a Stefan Ristic (Belgrade, Serbia) kill in the second set. McMaster picked up its offence though, registering 11 kills in the remainder of the set (for a set total of 16) to climb back into it.
The teams traded points down the stretch and Ryerson held set point at 24-23 but Dany Demyanenko Jimenez (Toronto) earned back-to-back points on a block and kill from the middle to give the Marauders set point. A Jayson McCarthy (Oshawa) block put an end to the exciting set to give McMaster the 28-26 decision.
The Rams stuck with the Marauders throughout the third set but couldn’t muster any significant point streaks to take a lead. Consecutive service errors from McMaster gave the Rams late life but they ultimately lost the set, 25-22, to complete the Marauder sweep.
The Rams were led by Robert Wojcik (Whitby) and Luka Milosevic (Toronto) who each finished with eight kills. After a tough start, middle Marc Reardon (London) had a strong game with five kills and two blocks.
For McMaster, Stephen Maar and Demyanenko Jimenez led the way with eight kills and seven kills, respectively. Setter Austin Campion-Smith recorded 31 assists.
