In what Mohawk men’s head basketball coach Brian Jonker called a war, his Mountaineers defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 60-57 in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday (Nov. 10).
The reigning Ontario Colleges Athletic Association champion Mohawk team was ranked No. 2 in the country going into the contest against the top rated Algoma side. What the Thunderbirds had going for them was their 4-0 record, while the Mountaineers, also unbeaten, had played only three times.
“(It was) a very physical battle that we were up for,” said Jonker. “Anytime you can beat Algoma in the Sault, you did something well.”
The coach said big Taylor Dowhaniuk played his best game as a Mountaineer, scoring 24 points and adding 10 rebounds. Manny Campbell had 12 points and Andrew Cicuttini contributed nine.
Jonker said it doesn’t get any easier. “We will enjoy this for a day then get back to work preparing for an equally strong Fanshawe team next Friday.”
The news was not as good for the women’s team as Mohawk bowed, 68-56, to Algoma. The Thunderbirds improved to 4-0 while the Mountaineers, slipped to 2-2.
