Beaton, Coates Mac’s best this week

In becoming this week’s Pita Pit McMaster athlete of the Week, linebacker Shane Beaton (Brampton) led a ferocious McMaster defense that controlled the Guelph Gryphons en route to winning McMaster’s sixth Yates Cup title.

The fifth-year veteran had 10 solo tackles, including three tackles for a loss and one pass knockdown as he was all over the field for the Maroon in Saturday’s game.

Beaton was recognized for his effort with the Dalt White Trophy as the most valuable player of the Yates Cup game which was the Marauders 20th straight victory going back to last season.

Veteran runner Victoria Coates won her first individual Canadian Interuniversity Sport cross country medal during the weekend when she finished third at the national championships in London.

The Newmarket native ran the 5km race in a time of 17:31.4 and was named a CIS First-Team All-Canadian. This is her second time being named a CIS First-Team All-Canadian in her career and her fourth team medal as the Marauders took second place overall.
