Wednesday (Nov. 14) was School Day at Copps Coliseum and when class was dismissed, the Hamilton Bulldogs had some homework to do.
The Rochester Americans defeated the hometown Bulldogs, 4-1, in front of a mostly student crowd of 10,649 for the morning contest, handing Hamilton its third straight loss and fourth in five games.
Brian Flynn scored what would stand as the game-winner early in the second period and added an assist while David Leggio stopped 26 shots for the victory.
Rochester opened the scoring at 16:01 of the first frame on a goal by Nick Tarnasky. Brayden McNabb’s initial shot bounced onto the stick of Rick Schofield and he redirected the puck to Tarnasky who slipped it behind starting goaltender Robert Mayer.
Flynn’s goal at 4:12 of the second stanza gave the Amerks a 2-0 lead.
Rochester went ahead three goals eight minutes later when Jerome Gauthier-Leduc potted his first professional goal in his first professional game.
The Amerks final goal came with just under five minutes left in the second period, T.J. Brennan beat Mayer for his seventh goal of the season.
Scott Darling, just signed to a Professional Tryout Contract, relieved Mayer after the goal and stopped all eight shots he faced. Mayer stopped 18 of 22.
The Bulldogs broke the shutout bid at 17:35 of the third period when Joonas Nattinen got his first of the season. Antoine Corbin’s point shot was stopped by Leggio but the rebound came out to Nattinen. With the assist on the play, Corbin earned his first professional point.
The Bulldogs’ next game is Friday (Nov.16) at 7:30 p.m. against the Toronto Marlies at Copps Coliseum.
