Los Angeles – Burlington’s Sami Harb won his final preliminary round match at the 24th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior championships on Tuesday (Nov. 13).
Competing in the Boy’s 16 and under, Harb defeated Rodrigo Salgado of Chile, 15-6, 15-6. Harb’s team-mate, Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta. didn’t play on Tuesday, but won both of his preliminary round matches on Sunday and Monday.
In Boy’s 18 and under, both Ashton Duda of Regina and Samuel Murray of Baie Comeau, Que. lost Tuesday. Duda fell to Jose Diaz of the USA, 15-4, 15-4, while Murray lost in a tie-breaker against Missael Leija of Mexico, 15-3, 11-15, 11-5.
Canada’s players in Boy’s 14 and under split their matches with John De Michele of Mississauga, winning against Jack Skehan of Ireland, 15-3, 15-13, and Trevor Webb of Cambridge, losing to Daniel Rojas of USA, 15-7, 15-10.
Canada’s players in Girl’s 18 and under lost both their matches to strong American players, Brittany Nelson of Windsor lost to Samantha Simmons (USA), 15-7, 15-10, while Zoe Hanson of Regina lost to Kelani Bailey (USA), 15-3, 15-1.
In Girl’s 16 and under, Michèle Morissette of Baie Comeau lost on Tuesday to Zimena Gonzalez of Mexico, 15-0, 15-6. Danielle Drury of Saskatoon didn’t play Tuesday.
Callie Drury of Saskatoon defeated Lilian Zea, 15-1, 15-8, in Girl’s 14 and under, and her team-mate Alexis Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta., also won Tuesday, as Hee Jin Koo of South Korea defaulted.
