The No. 3 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders men’s volleyball team kept its unbeaten record intact with a three-game sweep of the visiting Guelph Gryphons, 25-22, 25-29, 25-16, in Ontario University Athletics play on Friday (Nov. 16).
The Marauders lead the OUA with a 6-0 record.
The Gryphons came out like they planned to end the Mac winning streak, jumping out to an early 13-10 lead in the opening set. But McMaster rookie outside hitter Jayson McCarthy got into a serving groove and scored seven straight points, including two aces, to give McMaster a 17-13 lead and the momentum to take them to their first win.
The second set saw the Marauders take an early lead which they didn’t relinquish.
Now down two sets, the wind seemed to go out of Guelph’s sails and the Marauders seized on the opportunity to jump on their opponent, opening a 7-2 lead and never really letting Guelph get close in the 25-16 victory.
McCarthy was named the McDonald’s Big Mac player of the game for McMaster, as he had a strong overall match, and swung the momentum in the key opening set toward his team. The Marauders also got excellent work from middle Tyson Alexander, libero Dan Groenveld, and setter Austin Campion-Smith.
The Marauders will face the Waterloo Warriors in a battle for first place. Waterloo is 5-0. Sunday’s (Nov.18) showdown starts at 3 p.m. in the Burridge Gym.
