Bruins hand Mohawk first loss in men’s V-ball

The Mohawk Mountaineers are going to be known for the generous hospitality when it comes to Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play.

On Friday night, the Fanshawe Falcons visited and left with basketball wins in men’s and women’s games. On Saturday, the Oakville Sheridan Bruins were guests at the Fennel Gym and helped themselves to volleyball wins, beating the Mountaineers men’s team in five sets and the women’s squad in four sets.

The Sheridan men knocked off the 10th ranked team in the country by taking the deciding set after Mohawk rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match. The scores were 26-24, 25-21, 15-25, 23-25, 15-11. The Bruins also knocked the Mountaineers from the ranks of the undefeated. Both teams are now 4-1.

Cody Williams led the Bruins with 18 kills, one service ace and one stuff block. Once again, Mo Sulaiman led the Mountaineers with 20 kills, and one block, while Trevor McLaughlin had 19 kills and one block and Marcin Jedzrejewski had 12 kills and one block.

Sheridan won the women’s match, 25-23, 25-22,17-25, 25-9. Sommer Maltby paced the Bruins with nine kills and four aces, while Kaitlin Gagnon had four kills, one ace and 17 digs. For the Mountaineers, Melissa DeHaan came up with nine kills, five aces and two blocks.

Chantal Baker had 11 digs to go with one kill, one ace and two blocks and Julie Gagnon recorded 10 digs as well as four kills and one block.

Mohawk’s record slipped to 3-2, while Sheridan improved to 2-3.
