Rookie Mac wrestler holds his own

McMaster wrestlers pinned down a bronze medal at the University of Toronto Wrestling Open on Saturday (Nov.17).

Rookie grappler Ahmed Shamiya (Burlington) took third place in the 61kg weight class. The Kinesiology major defeated Henry Guzman of the Brock Badgers for the bronze.

Another freshman, Andrew Sinclair (Hagersville) placed fourth in the 54kg weight class. Concordia’s Trevor Banks defeated Sinclair in the bronze medal match.

Also taking a fourth was second-year Eric Steffler (Tottenham), who was defeated by Ignatius Pitt from Toronto Team Impact in the 76kg weight class.

Rookie Nathan Strugnell (Brantford) finished sixth at 61kg, losing to Josh Garnder of Kingston in the fifth place match.

The McMaster wrestling team will compete at the Queen’s Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 2 in their last meet before the Christmas break.
