In a battle for top spot in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Region men’s volleyball, the hometown Nipissing Lakers scored a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Mohawk Mountaineers in North Bay on Saturday (Nov. 24)
Mohawk was on its way to a sweep after taking the first two sets, but Nipissing came charging back to pull out the victory, 21-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-10.
Marcin Jedrzjewski led the Mountaineer offense with 11 kills and two service aces for 13 points and added 14 digs on defense. Eric Danecke had seven kills, two aces and four stuff blocks. Mo Sulaiman contributed eight kills, one ace and one block.
For the Lakers, Todd Podstawka has 18 kills, two aces and one block, while Scott Coulthard came up with 14 kills and four blocks.
With the win, Nipissing went to the top of the division standings with a 6-1 record. Mohawk fell back into a tie for second with Ancaster Redeemer Royals, both with 5-2 marks.
The Mohawk women dropped a 3-1 decision to Nipissing, 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13.
Charlotte Huitema came off the bench to score three kills and three aces, plus seven digs for the Mountaineers. Melissa DeHaan had six kills and Kristin VanHartingsveldt had two kills, one ace and three blocks. Melanie Patenaude produced 16 digs.
For the Lakers, Victoria Taylor had 12 kills, while Jacquie Dyball had eight kills and three blocks and Melissa White managed seven kills and four aces.
Mohawk is now 4-2 and in fourth place, four points behind Humber, Nipissing and Fanshawe, all with 12 points.
