Kelowna, B.C. – Ancaster’s Eric Desrochers, who knocked off the No. 1 seed in semi-final play, lost in the men’s final of a Racquetball Canada’s National Team Selection event.
Tim Landeryou of Saskatoon edged Desrochers, 15-13, 11-15, 11-7. It’s Landeryou’s first Selection Event win.
“It feels great,” said Landeryou, who felt “it was really anyone’s event to win” so the victory is especially sweet.
Desrochers served great all tournament, including in the semi-finals when he eliminated Kris Odegard of Saskatoon, 15-11, 12-15, 11-8.
Desrochers’ serve made Landeryou feel like he was “fighting an uphill battle all match.” Landeryou knew he was “going to have to fight for every single point.”
And fight he did as he played tie-breakers in all of his matches, including the final.
In the semi-finals, Landeryou beat another Saskatoon player, Nathaniel Husulak, 9-15, 15-9, 11-5.
Desrochers advanced to the final with wins over Tanner Prentice of Macrorie, SK, 15-4, 15-13; and Lee Connell of Saskatoon, 15-7, 15-1.
On the women’s side, No. 1 seed Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg defeated the No. 2 seed, Christine Richardson of Regina, 16-14, 15-12.
Results from this weekend will be combined with results from the National Team Selection Event in February 2013 in Brossard, Que. and the 2012 Canadian National Championships last May in Brossard, Que. to select the players who will represent Canada at the 2013 Pan American Championships next Easter.
