The McMaster women’s water polo team captured a bronze medal at the Ontario University Athletics Championships in the nation’s capital over the weekend (Nov. 23-25). Two Marauders were also named OUA All-Stars for their play over the weekend.
The Marauders got off to a good start at the championships with a big win over the Queen’s Gaels on Friday night with a 9-5 victory.
On day two, the Marauders lost 11-5 to the Toronto Varsity Blues in the morning and absorbed a second loss, 7-3, to the Ottawa Gee-Gees later that day.
Forced to play a strong Carleton Ravens squad in the semifinals on Sunday morning, the Marauders fell to the eventual champions, 12-10, in a hard-fought match.
In the bronze medal game, McMaster and Ottawa met again. The Marauders avenged their Saturday loss to the Gee-Gees, emerging victorious, 6-4, to capture the OUA bronze.
The Carleton Ravens edged the Varsity Blues in the finals in a shootout after a 5-5 tie in regulation time.
Marauder veterans Nadine Asmis and Danielle McCallum were named OUA All-Stars. Also being named to the All-Star team included Meaghan Broddy of Carleton, Danielle Hirsh and Stephanie Watson of Toronto and Chantal Ouellette from Ottawa.
