Cleveland – A lack of fire power resulted in the Hamilton Bulldogs losing 4-0 to the Lake Erie Monsters in an American Hockey League game on Saturday (Dec. 29).
Monsters’ goalie Calvin Pickard faced only 17 shots from the Bulldogs to earn the shutout. Hamilton netminders Cedrick Dejardins, who started, and Robert Mayer faced a total of 47 shots. Hamilton was outshot 22-4 in the opening period but gave up just one goal.
Stefan Elliott scored two goals and Bill Thomas and Brad Malone each had two points to spark the Monsters attack.
The Monsters opened the scoring at 18:23 of the opening frame on a power-play goal by Elliott. After picking up a loose puck at the side of the net, Elliott threw it out in front and it bounced off of a body and into the net.
Thomas failed on a penalty shot attempt for Lake Erie as he lost control of the puck at 11:24 of the second period. After 40 minutes of play, the score remained 1-0 for the Monsters , who had built a 33-12 margin in shots on goal.
Elliott’s second goal came at 5:13 of the third stanza as he snapped wicked wrist shot from the far circle past Desjardins. Just 18 seconds later, Mark Olver made a great move in traffic and lifted the puck over Desjardins.
Lake Erie completed its scoring at 8:24 of the third frame as Thomas put a loose puck behind Desjardins on the power play. Following the goal, Mayer relieved Desjardins.
The Bulldogs’ next game is against the Americans in Rochester on Monday (Dec. 31).
