Despite 28 podium finishes, the Marauders swim teams lost 161-110 in a dual men’s and women’s meet at McMaster on Saturday (Jan. 12). Competing against the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s No. 1 Toronto Varsity Blues, the men fell 85-50 and the women lost 76-60.
Sarah Taylor led the Marauder women, climbing the podium three times over the course of the afternoon event. The fourth-year swimmer claimed silver alongside Emily Fung, Alexa Vanommen, and Natasha Strass-Hundal in the 200m medley relay (2:01.41), and added two individual golds in the 50m butterfly (29.08) and 50m freestyle (27.26) events.
Vanommen collected three silvers, with successes in the 50m (34.26) and 100m (1:13.08) breaststroke events complementing the team effort. Rookie Emma Mittermaier contributed two medals, with a gold in the 100m butterfly (1:04.76) and silver in the 100m individual medley (1.05:57).
Konrad Bald was the Marauders’ standout on the men’s side, dominating the breaststroke en route to gold in both the 50m (28.76) and 100m (1:04.02) races. Veteran Cam Bailey added two silvers on the day, medalling in the 100m individual medley (58.04) and the 50m freestyle (23.84) events.
The Marauders return to action on Friday (Jan. 18) when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees in another dual at the Ivor Wynne Centre.
