The Redeemer Royals men’s volleyball team has claimed its highest national ranking in program history. And, the No. 3 position is Redeemer’s highest ranking across all programs.
The recent rise from No. 6 in Canada last week is due to an impressive win on Friday night against the Nipissing Lakers who were No.1 in Canada at the time. The Lakers move down to No. 4 in this week’s ranking.
Three of Redeemer’s teams were ranked in 2012 with the men’s volleyball team going from No.11 to No. 9; the women’s cross country team reached No. 7, and the badminton team settled in at No. 12.
This season the men’s volleyball squad has gone from No.9, to No. 6, to No. 3.
Redeemer’s highest previous national listing was No.4 in November 2009 when the men’s volleyball team was in first place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Division and was the top rated team in Ontario.
Redeemer’s win over Nipissing on Jan. 11 marked the second time this season, the Royals got the better of the then-top ranked team in Canada. This time it came in a five-set comeback and Eric Heidbuurt (Waterdown) led Redeemer with 11 kills and 15 points.
That effort earned the Royals the OCAA Team of the Week award.
Redeemer and Nipissing sit on top of the OCAA West with 9-2 records, with Redeemer holding the tie breaker.
The Royals will put their recent ranking to the test this weekend when they get back on the road for an away trip to Conestoga College on Friday (Jan 18).
