A battle is being waged atop the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s men’s basketball standings, and it includes Mohawk.
Three teams sit at 20 points after Mohawk’s visit to London on Wednesday (Jan. 16) and beat the Fanshawe Falcons, 74-59. That left those two teams with 10-2 records, while the idle Sheridan Bruins, at 10-1, are hoping to break up the logjam when they visit winless Canadore on Saturday (Jan. 19) in North Bay.
The Mountaineers got 21 points and seven rebounds from Alex Reis plus 19 points and six assists from Manny Campbell in their victory.
Fanshawe, which got 11 points and nine boards from Gareth Edwards, led 15-8 after the first quarter, but Mohawk led 38-35 at the half and 58-46 at three quarter time.
The news was not as good for the Mohawk women, who bowed, 52-34, to Fanshawe. The Falcons grabbed a 24-5 first quarter lead, and although the Mountaineers outscored the home side 16-5 in the second quarter, they managed a total of just 13 points in the entire second half.
Carissa Browne scored eight points for Mohawk, while Natalie Fisher had seven.
The Mountaineers are now 5-5 while Fanshawe jumped to 9-2.
