SYDNEY, Australia – Sydney Pickrem of St-Jerome, Que., earned the silver medal and Evan White of Oakville, added a bronze in their respective 400-metre individual medley races in swimming action Friday (Jan.18) at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.
In the women’s 400-m IM, Yiu Ohashi of Japan took the gold in 4:43.54 with Pickrem ranking second in 4:44.05. Wakaba Tsuyuuchi of Japan was third in 4:44.09 and Emily Overholt of West Vancouver fourth in 4:45.86.
In the men’s 400-m IM, Ryo Fujimoto of Japan placed first in 4:21.61 while Bradlee Ashby of New Zealand edged White for the silver in 4:27.31. White finished in 4:27.63.
There was another fourth place finish for Canada in the women’s 4X200-m freestyle relay with Lili Margitai and Alexandra Aitchison, both of Edmonton, Paige Kremer of St. Albert, Alta., and Pickrem.
Margitai was also fifth in the 100-m freestyle and Pickrem seventh in the 100-m breaststroke.
Other men’s results, Canada was sixth in the 4X200-m freestyle relay with Peter Brothers of Victoria, Bryce Kwiecien-Delaney of Oakville, James Dergousoff of Christina Lake, B.C., and White.
Dergousoff was also seventh in the 100-m breaststroke.
Canada is fielding its national youth team (16 and under) and is competing primarily against junior-aged (17-18) competition at this event.
The Festival, launched in 2001 and held every two years, has attracted more than 1,700 athletes from 30 countries competing in 17 sports this year. More than 150 Olympians have competed at the festival.
