The McMaster Marauders recovered from a setback in the opening set to beat the Guelph Gryphons in four and extend their unbeaten conference run to 13 matches in Ontario University Athletics volleyball action.
Set scores were 24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 as Canadian Interuniversity Sport No. 2 ranked McMaster wrapped up another spotless weekend to improve to 13-0 in OUA play and retain its four-point lead atop the conference standings.
Veteran middle Tyson Alexander led the Marauders with 15.5 points in the win, hitting 10 of his 20 attempts for kills with only three errors and added seven block assists and a solo block. Outside hitter Jori Mantha was the most efficient player in Maroon and Grey, converting 10 of 19 attempts with two errors on his way to a total of 15 points.
Guelph’s veteran right side Winston Rosser was the match’s leading scorer on Saturday, accumulating 18.5 points and 15 kills on 30 hitting attempts with eight errors.
The host Gryphons were able to eke out the opening set with Rosser featuring prominently, as the right side had five of his 15 kills in the first.
McMaster managed a late push to tie the set at 24, before Guelph edged ahead to seal it in bonus points.
A close start to the second set had the Marauders leading by a single point at the technical timeout, and they would cling to that slim advantage to claim the set by a score of 25-22.
The visitors raced out to an early 8-1 lead in the third, and held it throughout to take the set convincingly by a 25-17 score. It was a mid-set push that propelled the Marauders forward in the fourth, as they took a 16-12 lead into the technical timeout and wouldn’t look back from there.
